TUT13: Future Networks for Disaster Management – Forest Fire Spread Simulation over 5G Environment

SCOPE

Advancements in technology are aiding Disaster Management towards quick actions on the ground and saving lives and resources. Leveraging High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Communication primitives toward addressing such societal needs are of paramount importance. Wildfires are associated with human evolution and occur regularly in almost all forests worldwide; however, when these fires become uncontrollable, they often turn into disasters. Raging wildfires result in the loss of natural resources, biodiversity, property, and human lives. Significant wildfires have happened in the last 100 and more years in countries like the U.S.A., Canada, and Australia. C-DAC and a team of researchers and experts are engaged in devising mechanisms to address such incidents happening across specific states in India.

Consequently, significant research has been carried out on wildfires in these countries. In many other countries where there are instances of devastating wildfires, there is a paucity of valuable research data. Considering the significant rate of spread of large wildfires, it is important to forecast the fire spread using High-Performance Computing System (HPC) based on human and satellite-based alerts, visualize the same in the 3D geospatial domain, deploy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for real-time fire reporting and disseminate the data over 5/6G network to the firefighters and enabling immersive video services, i.e., augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). This will help in safeguarding human lives and movable property. The proposed tutorial will expose the participants to learning the different technical and ecological components related to the modeling of wildfire spread and disseminating the information over a 5G network on a near real-time basis.

Neelakandan Subramanian, Senior Director (R&D), Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), C-DAC Innovation Park, Panchavati, Pashan, Pune – 411 008, Maharashtra, India

Short Bio: Dr. Neelakandan. Subramanian is serving as Senior Director (R&D) at C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing). He is involved in coordinating R&D activities across C-DAC Research Labs and engaged in coordinating projects such as eSign – Online Digital Signing service, AI for Cyber security, Quantum Computing & Communication, 5G Middleware & Applications, SDN & Cyber security and ICT Accessibility standards. His specific research interests include Computer & Network Security, Computer Networks & Protocols, 5G/6G, Quality of Service and Software Defined Networks, etc. He contributes to preparing Technology Foresight & Roadmap Reports and Standardisation activities. He guides PhD and M.Tech students and mentors Start-Ups as part of Hackathons. He is a member of various technical committees of Government, Doctoral Committee(s), BIS, IEEE Standards Association, and TSDSI.

 

Manish P. Kale, Joint Director, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), C-DAC Innovation Park, Panchavati, Pashan, Pune – 411 008, Maharashtra, India

Short Bio: Dr. Manish P. Kale is an Ecologist specializing in satellite remote sensing applications in forestry. His research interests include forest fire forecasting, carbon sequestration modeling, biodiversity characterization at the landscape level, and field-based investigations. He has carried out his research at the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), Dept. of Space, Govt. of India. He was awarded a prestigious ISRO-GBP fellowship (1999-2002) to carry out his research work. He has a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences for his research on application of satellite remote sensing in biomass estimation and net primary productivity modeling. He has several publications to his credit in national and international journals of repute. At present, he is working with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune as Joint Director and is Chief Investigator of the project on Forest-Fire Spread Simulation. This project is funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Govt. of India and has the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (India) and the Department of Science and Technology, Sikkim (India), as collaborative partners.
