SCOPE
5G systems deployment is underway around the globe. By March 2022, seventy-two countries had launched 5G networks. As expected, most of the deployments use a non-standalone (NSA) that cannot deliver all the envisioned capabilities for 5G for different verticals. At the same time,we are already considering the evolution toward B5G systems, particularly pursuing the needs of different verticals. One strategic topic common to several verticals is sustainability.B5G is thus not only based on new technologies for mobile communication but also requires a new mindset to the ecosystem related to this area, including government, operators, developers, academia, startups, and companies. In this scenario, it is necessary to enhance the dialogue between these actors using different fora and events: the success of B5G will rely on the identification of synergies and the need to consider sustainability aspects.
After previous successful editions of these Dialogues, this third initiative continues to aim to bring specialists from different 5G verticals to expose a more profound vision of the interrelations areas, discuss possibilities of new types of services and applications and foster a common culture and
view between the 5G ICT area and the different verticals, now focused in bringing sustainability discussions forefront to the minds of the stakeholders. An additional objective is to enhance the audience of the IEEE Future Networks World Forum with the public from the different vertical domains by helping to put these communities together. This year, our concern is focused on aspects associated with the multiple dimensions of sustainability, from sustainable ICT to the dimensions of ICT as an enabler for the sustainability of verticals.
B5G related challenges are not only related with technical, standards and regulatory, and business issues. They are also related to creating a value chain that combines operators and service providers to create customized services that create value to specific vertical domains while fulfilling increased stringent ecoregulations. The way 5G related community work in cooperation with these different verticals is also necessary to change. In general, events focusing on 5G bring technical specialists and practitioners from this area. However, they do not involve the specialists from the verticals that usually remain outside the 5G community. A closer look at the program for events such as the 7th Global 5G Event and the IEEE Future Networks World Forum shows that most of the speakers are from the 5G area and not from the different verticals, or without hands-on experience with those verticals. This session aims to overcome this challenge.
ORGANIZERS
Rui Aguiar received his degree in telecommunication engineering in 1990 and his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2001 from the University of Aveiro. He is currently a Full Professor at the University of Aveiro, responsible for the networking area. He has been previously an adjunct professor at the INI, Carnegie Mellon University, and a visiting Research Scholar at Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Brazil and an advisory for the Portuguese Communication Minister. He is coordinating a research line nationwide in Instituto de Telecomunicações, on the area of Networks and Services. He is the current chair of the Steering Board of the Networld Europe ETP His current research interests are centered on the implementation of advanced wireless networks and systems, with special emphasis on B5G networks. He has more than 500 published papers in those areas, including standardization contributions to IEEE and IETF. He has served as technical and general chair of several conferences, from IEEE, ACM, and IFIP, and is regularly invited for keynotes on 5G and Future Internet networks. He is a senior member of IEEE, Portugal ComSoc Chapter Chair, and a member of ACM. He currently sits on the Advisory Board of several EUprojects and research units from several countries and the editorial board of several journals.
Maziar Nekovee is a Professor of Telecoms and Mobile Technologies and Head of Centre for Advanced Communications, Mobile Technology and IoT at University of Sussex. From February 2017 to February 2019, he was also Head of Department of Engineering and Design at Sussex during which period he oversaw a threefold increase in Department’s research funding, significant clime in league tables, successful introduction of two undergraduate programs in Robotics and two new Masters, including one in 5G Mobile Communications, and the establishment of new teaching and research collaborations with China, the Middle East and Africa. Maziar sits (as the only UK academic) at the EU’s 5G Infrastructure Association, where he advises the EC on 5G and beyond-5G Strategic Research Agenda. He is also on the steering board of the EPSRC-funded ComNet2 consortium in mobile technologies and the US National Academy of Science (NSF) funded research coordination network on 5G communications and networks and is Vice Chair of NetWorld 2020 European Technology Platform in Telecommunication Networks and Services, and a member of the Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation (AIIOT).
Flávio Oliveira de Oliveira Silva holds a Ph.D. from the University of São Paulo (2013) and a master’s in Computer Science, Federal University Uberlândia (2004). He is Graduated in Computer Science from the Federal University of Uberlândia (1993) and in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Uberlândia (1992). Associate professor at the Faculty of Computer Science (FACOM) of the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). He holds over twenty-five years of experience in the software industry. Also, he has experience in project management using the PMI method, team building, and
professional training. Member of the IEEE, ACM, and SBC has several articles published and presented at conferences worldwide and is a reviewer of journals such as the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications Research (ETRI) and the IEEE Network Magazine. Also, member of the Technical Program Committee (TCP) of several IEEE conferences, such as ICC and NETSOFT. He is an individual member of the FIWARE Foundation and a participant in FIWARE Mundus and FIWARE iHub (MSC) mission support committees. Coordinator of several national and international projects involving several national and international collaborations funded by different sources such as CAPES, CNPq, FAPEMIG, FAPESP, BNDES, ABDI, Petrobras, SEBRAE / RJ, and NOKIA. From 2017 to 2020, he was the local coordinator at UFU of the H2020 5GINFRE. Currently, he is the coordinator of the project “BRASIL5G and Beyond,” funded by MCTIC. Also, he is the local coordinator at UFU of the project “BRASIL 6G,” a consortium with other Brazilian members institutions funded by MCTIC. Currently also a principal investigator in the project Slicing Future Internet Infrastructure (SFI2) funded by FAPESP in Brassil. His current research interests are related to Future Networks; Software Defined Networks; Network Function Virtualization; Autonomous and Intelligent Systems; Cloud Computing; Ubiquitous and Mobile Computing; Software-Based Innovation.
